Lasers and sheet processes group

TWI has been on the cutting edge of technological development in the field of laser materials processing since the mid 1960s. Many process developments and equipment advancements have been made since this time. Today lasers are widely used in many industry sectors employing the processes of cutting, welding, marking, surface engineering and direct part fabrication. The range of applications covers metals, plastics, semiconductors and ceramics on a scale from sub-micron to several metres.

The Lasers & Sheet Processes Group at TWI concentrates mainly on the processing of metals, using high power laser sources, such as the Neodymium YAG solid state laser and the Ytterbium fibre laser, operating at powers up to 7kW. Work in the areas of plastics welding and small scale processes with lasers is undertaken within the Advanced Manufacturing Processes Group.

The Laser and Sheet Processes Group offers a full range of services available to TWI members world-wide, which includes contract research and development for single clients, groups or collaborative projects within the framework of UK and European programmes, as well as consultancy and provision of information.

In hand with laser processing, the Laser and Sheet Processes Group also provides a wealth of experience in other areas of sheet joining such as resistance welding, mechanical fastening and riveting
