Composition and microstructure control is the key to establishing acceptable material properties. TWI provides a comprehensive material characterisation service, with a particular emphasis on joints, which supports its Industrial Member's needs across a broad spectrum.
We provide:
- Expert, multidisciplinary interpretation of data
- Light optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging to 100,000X
- Grain size, crystallographic type, orientation, phase balance and local strain analysis by electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD)
- X-ray diffraction identification of phase type and volume fraction
- Chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy
- Microanalysis by energy dispersive and wavelength dispersive x-ray (EDX and WDX) techniques, including an electron microprobe, for example for microphase, inclusion and surface deposit analysis
- Hydrogen analysis by vacuum hot extraction, fusion and Yanaco methods
- Carbon, sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen analysis
- Differential scanning calorimetry
- Fourier transform infrared spectrometry
- Collection and analysis of welding fume and ozone
- Hardness and microhardness measurement
