The NDT Validation Centre at Port Talbot

NDT 3 is run by the NDT Validation Centre, which has a team of experienced NDT specialists and an extensive range of state-of-the-art non-destructive testing equipment:

Digital radiography
- enables critical components to be X-rayed and viewed in real time 2D images.

Laser shearography
- utilises the monochromatic properties of reflected light to detect possible defects such as material degradation or residual stress.

Thermography
- heats the component and records changes in material temperatures using infrared digital camera technology thus detecting subsurface indications such as impact damage / delaminations.

Computerised tomography
- produces high resolution 3D images from X-ray pictures, enabling the component images to be reverse engineered, allowing detailed analysis of the component.

Ultrasonics
- uses one or more transducers to generate ultrasonic waves, which are then interpreted to determine defect indications within the component.

Modelling
- uses software to run virtual NDT scenarios to determine the best NDT method for a particular application.
